Is the album really dead ? / Short attention span ! PDF Print E-mail

As i write this i am looking at a mountain of albums on CD and I'm wondering how much of my life span i want to waste listening to allot of it. Apart from a select group of 'classic' albums that run from track 1 till the end and you want to listen to all of it, the rest are just taking up space. I could take maybe 1 or 2 tracks at the most from 60% of my collection that i could honestly say i would listen to again.

And maybe that's what i will do. Take the songs i want, put them on another format and ditch the CD's. Of course you would have to prise my vinyl albums out of my dead hands... why is that? that vinyl should remain so sacred. Vinyl is sacred, there is nothing like getting a double album out and unfolding the cover, marveling at the images and reading obscure details like who manufactured the album and what studio is was recorded in... marvelous!

Is this not just the way we are now? we hold on to the sacred items that we would never part with and yet we want less and less of everything else. With so many bands, so many websites, so many television channels, so many youtube videos... we have to condense our media into smaller and smaller chunks. We simply don't have enough time to see everything.

And yet i feel i have watched pretty much everything there is to watch on television, which is why i don't watch it much anymore. Unless something new comes on which really takes my interest. And communication, so much social networking... it's why i like twitter, 140 character messages are just what the doctor ordered for weary networkers who just can't keep up the pace of it all.

What is my point?

Well it concerns artists, mainly artist pages on OMD's and elsewhere... FACT: the online surfer does not hang around, they may get to where you are and look for 30 secs and then there gone again and they may never return. So having the most complex multi-media/social networked/guestbooked/forumed nasa like website/page etc is a complete waste of time.

I remember for a while the Pink Floyd website was this hyper multi-media experience, maybe they thought it was part of their progressive image, anyway it's all gone now, they have returned to a simple interface. I myself designed websites 5 years ago that were so flash intensive it was almost like you became part of the program... It was 'Tron' become real...

If you need 140 characters to grab someones attention then you need 30 secs of music to autoplay and grab their attention right from the start. And an image that will stick in their head (just look at the photos of featured band Scarlet Blonde). Then you need them to download and share that information and make it spread out... that is what we are looking at here at AL. It's very much a chaotic picture at the moment, digital distribution, online promotion... eventually things will take form but right now it seems more and more companies are bringing out new websites that all try and suggest they have the next miracle tool... That is one thing you won't get here, overblown hype...

I was umming and arring last night my index finger poised to hit the return button that would have purchased the iPhone I was salivating about but at the last moment I just shut the window down..

I think because right now i have my head stuck in a computer in my spare time so when i'm outside of that the last thing i need is another connection to iTunes and the web in my head...

I actually just don't have time to listen to any of my old collection because I'm listening to so much new music I'm discovering via Twitter...

The standard of indie production has improved by leaps and bounds... technology has been the independent musicians messiah

A lot of truth in what you say, Nev. To this day I still buy CDs and DVDs and I still enjoy having a collection of things I like but I've got I've got about 500 CDs on a stand right next to me here and maybe there are 25 of them at most that I've pulled out for a listen in the last 6 months. There are dozens and dozens that I'll probably never listen to or touch again as long as I live. On the other hand though I did take the time to dump hundreds of songs into my iTouch player and I hook that up in the car and at work frequently. So actually, I do have a good chunk of it stored in one easy to get at place and it's all stuff that I know I'll get around to from time to time. I'd say at least 10% of what's in there is stuff by AL artists I've enjoyed over the years. Phil Brown, Nad, Jude Johnstone, some Gustav/Gordon faves, and others. Amazing to me too how stuck in my ways I am. I'd say fully a quarter of what's in my player is either Beatles, Steely Dan, King Crimson or Frank Sinatra. Music that I'll love and return to 'til the day I die, of that I'm sure.

I'll say this too. Nev, you're doing some great work here. I got your note and yes, I'll have a chat with Remy very soon about the AL Hour. Him and I have some other important items of business to discuss as well so it's definitely a conversation I need to have. Things are moving at what seems like a snail's pace here and the latest setback is losing Kevin on guitar and vocals, my old bandmate from Air Condo that I had finally talked into climbing back on stage. Long story I'll cover later but we did pick up a guy (pretty sure) who's a great friend and a fantastic player so with luck we'll be back on track shortly.

Well, that officially was what I'd call rambling so I'll sign off for now. Keep up the great work, Nev. It's a joy and most interesting to watch the site grow and evolve and though I know you don't hear that much from me, I'm always checking to see how things are going here and am very impressed with the ongoing results. Keep it going my friend!
